Chartered in 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County is dedicated to providing affordable homeownership opportunities to low-income families in Greenville County. We are a non-profit Christian organization affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International. As of 2006 we have built more than 200 homes in Greenville County.
Habitat removes the traditional barriers to homeownership by working with each family’s unique situation, helping them address past credit issues and providing a 25-year zero-interest mortgage. We follow a Biblically based “faith in action” philosophy that strives to show the love of Christ by helping others help themselves. All qualified applicants must complete at least 250 hours of volunteer service to Habitat before they move into their new home. They complete budgeting and home maintenance classes and work with our partners to build their house. Above all, applicants must be motivated to want a better life for themselves and their children.
Community volunteers build all of the homes and get a chance to work with homeowners on-site. Thus, relationships are formed between the volunteers and homeowner families. Materials are paid for by contributions from churches, businesses, individuals, and private grants. That cost is then matched by the homeowner over 25 years, creating a revolving “Fund for Humanity” that will continually support our organization in building more homes for more families in need of decent, affordable homes.
